Message from the President...Support for and from WSRC

Heartwarming Actions in the Midst of Heartbreaking Tragedy... Words of support from Ben Eoin, Crabbe, Farlagne and Poley. Hilton's raise over $2K, Dave's Fruit and Vegetable Market donate 100 sandwiches. Wentworth Learning Centre posts thank you.

Sunday. April 19th, our Wentworth community and all of Nova Scotia was rocked to its core with horrific acts of violence against members of our community and surrounding areas.

Because we spend so much time in the Wentworth area, many of us own cottages in the area and have family and/or friends that have cottages in the area, it touched us very personally.  Indeed, several of our member families and some of our coaching staff were in the Valley on that fateful weekend.  As evidence of how close this event was to us, I am sure many of us were contacted by family and friends as the news spread to make sure we were okay.

Many members of the broader Atlantic Region ski community have reached out to WSRC in the wake of this tragedy.  Representatives of Poley, Farlagne and Crabbe have all reached out to our Program Coordinator, Gregor Byrne.  I received a call from CRMC President, Neil Manson, with wishes to our club members of hope and comfort.  I also received the following e-mail message from the BEST President, Tyler Kaupp last week ….
Good Morning Karen, I felt compelled to write a brief note to offer our condolences to you all.  Having this tragedy so close to where you all live has inevitably affected your organization.  Please know that Ben Eoin is thinking of you all and everyone affected by this senseless act of violence.  Take care,Tyler

As part of the Wentworth community, WSRC members felt compelled to help in some tangible way.
Katie Hilton spearheaded the effort to provide snacks and sandwiches to the Wentworth community centre who are feeding the RCMP, the volunteer firefighters and affected families.  In just three days last week $2540 was raised.  This includes a $100 donation from a co-worker of Katie’s who overhead her organizational efforts.

The Hiltons bought supplies and assembled snack bags complete with a heartfelt message from WSRC.  Katie went in search of sandwiches, individually-wrapped, but given the Covid situation, had a hard time finding a business who would provide these.  Shout out to Dave’s Fruit and Vegetable Market on Main Street, Dartmouth, who not only agreed to provide 100 individually wrapped sandwiches, but also refused to take payment and insisted on donating them (!!!)  Katie and Tim, each took a day off work, collected the sandwiches and delivered all the food last Friday.  The delivery was received with much thanks and gratitude and the Wentworth Learning Centre posted a thank you on their Instagram.

We thank everyone who contributed.  We only managed to spend $561.56 of the money raised.  Katie is in the process of reaching out to the Mayor to explore how WSRC might help the community of Wentworth with the $1,978.44 balance remaining.  We will share updates on this initiative.

We owe gratitude to Katie and the whole Hilton family for their efforts in stewarding this initiative to support the Wentworth community in a time of need.  I look forward to the day we can once again gather and give them a round of applause.  In the meantime, I hope the stories of these heartwarming actions of many brighten your day.
