K2 ,J1 & J2 UPDATE

Hey Gang. . . . . .GREAT weekend of training from ALL !! Despite the challenging conditions (Corn snow & warm temps) you all perservered and had a great weekend of training with lots of VOLUME. It was a good opportunity for you all to hone your skills racing in soft snow with deeper ruts than you've been accustomed to all winter.

This is a GOOD thing because for the next two weekends we will be RACING without a lot of opportunity for training.

Many of our racers will be attending the Race Series at Marble Mountain this weekend. We'd like to suggest that skis are tuned before you go so you are ready on arrival. A coat of travel wax would probably be a good idea also. Please go over and double check that you have all of the gear that you will need for racing at Marble. We're a long way from home to be forgetting stuff.

Speed training begins at Marble after Lunch on Thursday.Lets meet in the base lodge at noon to get together as a team. The Marble Cup is an individual as well as a Team event.WSRC won the Team trophy last season lets see if we can repeat again this year !!

Gregor and Dave will be the coaches working the Marble Mountain Race Series.

For the Racers who will be staying in WW this weekend Mike and Todd will be there to work with you training over the weekend. Take advantage of the smaller than normal group sizes to get in some great training with the guys to be prepared for the last Atlantic Series Race the following weekend at POLEY MTN.

Please bring SL gear for friday nite training and both GS and SL for Sat and Sunday.

We will train on Friday March12th before the POLEY Race if there is enough interest.

Mike Hardy and Mike Byrne are making their way to Ontario next weekend for a series of GS and SL FIS Races at Georgian Peaks and Devil's Glen. Good Luck boys - Bring back some low points for the Poley Mtn Races for us !!!!

We will be having a Spring March Break Camp the week of March 15 to 19th. The details of this camp to be announced shortly.

The WSRC FIS Group will be travelling to Ontario on Friday March 19th to Race the ENL SL Series at Mansfield on March 20 & 21st.

There will be regular Club training the weekend of March 19,20 & 21st as well as March 26,27 & 28th

The CWG's qualification Derby is on April 2, 3 & 4. Good luck to those of you who are selected to participate. Its taken a lot of hard work to get there !!

If the rest of our Team is not allowed to participate in some way in the Derby we will be having regular Club training over Easter Weekend.

Cheers. . . . .Gregor,Mike,Dave & Todd

Wow !!! What a great Rolland Brunner Weekend !! All of our athletes really performed well when it counted this weekend !! As your coaches we could not have been more PROUD of the athletes that we have been working with all winter !!

We had medal winners in pretty much all catagories and even SWEPT the J1 Girls SL podium !! We OWNED that podium !!!

For the first time in a few years both sides of the Rolland Brunner Trophy were WON by WSRC Athletes !!

Congratulations to Sarah Byrne and Mike Hardy !! Lets see if we can't keep it in-house for a few years !!

This week we'll train GS & SL on Friday if we have interest (and if the weather co-operates - they are calling for rain) Please let us know if you are interested in training Friday at back40@ns.aliantzinc.ca.

Friday Night we will Ski Slalom.

On Saturday we'll Train GS gates AM and free ski the whole MTN PM . . . .Bring some old skis lets have a little FUN !!

On Sunday we'll Ski Slalom all day.

K2 Update - February 15, 2010 - by Mike Clarke

Hi Everyone

What a week!!! Mother nature could not have been kinder to 60+ athletes and 9 coaches. The speed camp went very well and all WSRC athletes made great improvements in their speed skills and overall confidence. That was very evident on the weekend with the race results. Curtis was the lone fence tester!!
Never is there a race without challenges and we had our share. That stated, everyone worked through them and should take something positive from that moving forward.

One challenge that a few encountered related to equipment. A couple of points that should be brought forth where bindings are concerned. None of the coaches are certified technicians and really shouldn't be adjusting unfamiliar equipment. It goes without saying that the kids shouldn't be messing with the bindings as well. Most times, it is not the DIN setting that causes the ski to release prematurely. Speaking from experience, it is likely that the boot is not set to binding correctly. Either forward pressure is off or toe height adjustment is not correct. These two issues can and should be addressed by someone certified in a shop. Sometimes, the ski should come off even when we don't want it to as well.

Without going through every medal, let's just say that WSRC did very very well. To find the results go to acapoints.ca.

Looking to this week, Friday training is on. Bring both SL and GS skis as we haven't skied a lot of SL lately.

When not skiing, you can always think about your pre race plan and how to prepare to compete at "your" highest level.

Great job everyone!

Gregor, Mike and Dave

Hi Gang

Another successful race on books. WSRC athletes collected a slew of medals and are skiing very well. After a somewhat interesting drive down, the weather co operated and racing was tight.
There was somewhat of a downside to the weekend that Gregor, Dave, Todd and I want to mention. As athletes, you want us to help you get better and with the hard work you do, comes success. We assume that some success can be measured with medals. As parents, your child's self confidence, esteem and understanding that hard work pays off and is rewarded in front of their peers and family.
Our point is that we won 8-10 medals this past weekend that were not collected. We are sure that everyone felt that they had valid reasons to leave before the medal ceremony. Looking forward please take our concerns under consideration and celebrate the rewards of hard work by our athletes.

We've got a big 9 days ahead of us. No training during the day on Friday. We will meet @ 6:30pm in Port Greville room for video and mental training session. We all need to be a little more mental!
For Saturday and Sunday, bring all 3 skis. We'll try and do a bit of everything before the trek North to Crabbe Mtn.

Great weekend everyone
Mike, Gregor, Dave and Todd

PS A small group of us had a great chat about points on Saturday. If anyone wants to know more, please ask one of those that attended or myself (Mike).

K2 Update - January 27, 2010 - by Mike Clarke

Friday morning we'll get together for a little SL training. We'll keep it fresh and light before we make the trek to CB.

K2 Update -January 25, 2010  Update by Mike Clarke

Hi everyone,

Man... have we have been on a serious training roll!! The weather and conditions have been awesome to say the very least!

All athletes should be commended. For the past two weekends, I don't think we've seen you guys train more volume and work harder at getting better and faster. We talked about it before and I'll say it again. "Nobody... and I mean nobody.....will outwork us!" Just don't forget that free skiing is a very important part of ski improvement. Anytime you get a chance to step in and go, we should do it.

In between exams, keep thinking "BBF"! Study hard!

WSRC will have a group of six athletes heading off to the MSA FIS SPEED event for some fun on the long boards! Super G,Super Combined and DH !! First timers and some vets. Should be a great experience.

As Gregor will be at the FIS race in MSA, it will be Todd and Mike in Ben Eion.

Friday night will be upon us before you know it. Do your best to prepare yourself and skis before you arrive. Remember the preparation goals you each have. Most of you High Schoolers have a few days off before the weekend. . . .Try to get a day of free skiing in if possible. Please have skis sharpened and waxed before Friday night - This will give you more time to relax and focus on Racing & Preparation because you'll know that your equipment is ready !!

There will be a team meeting in Mike's room Friday night at 9:00 pm. Attendance is required. Remember just like the Race at Farlagne we will Support and Help each other as Team Mates - The only time we will be on our own is between the Start gate and the Finish Line !!

If any Moms or Dads want a National Points refresher, we can do so this weekend as well.

CONGRATS to The Cowboy (Mike Hardy) who finished 21st in a FIS Slalom on Saturday scoring an 82 !! Way to go !!

Have a great week everyone!

Mike, Dave and Gregor

January 18, 2010 - Update by Gregor Byrne

Hey Gang . . . . GREAT WEEKEND of TRAINING!!

We began on Friday with two very productive GS sessions (One from the top of Helter Skelter/Skeletor). . . . . . .Everyone was working hard and we feel that it was quite a productive day.

The 12 HRS of WW was a HUGE success thanks to all of your participation and pledge gathering !!!! We raised $10,000.00 !!!! You all deserve a pat on the back and a round of applause !!  Now we just have to get Angus (Goose) to let us spend it !!

The Slalom training with Martock on Saturday saw some athletes making some insightful changes to their technique and tactics. . . .All of you were focused on skiing faster and there was some great dialogue with the coaches. As all of you take more of an interest in the development and understanding of your own skiing we will see changes happen more rapidly. On average our team probably got in about 600 SL gates on Saturday - WAY TO GO !

Thanks to Jamie Lemesurier of POLEY who brought down the wireless timing and ran it for us during training - It was fun to have Russell training with us as well.

Many of you are learning to focus on the clock as merely a training tool to be utilized by you and the coaches. If we can all do this we will be moving in the right direction.

One thing that the coaching staff would ask is that when we tell you that we will be starting when the lift spins at 8:30 is that you are ON THE LIFT at 8:30. Otherwise there is no reason for us to be up the hill setting at O'Dark Hundred in the mornings. Let’s take advantage of all of the training space that we can get and be the first ones in the lift line from now on please.

Sunday the weather and snow were perfect for GS training and we got in a lot of it!! We noticed that a few of our athletes were tired, but that was expected after the AMAZING day that was put in by most on Saturday.

Please EAT smart this week and get in MORE sleep than usual to catch up on some long work outs over the weekend.

We are planning to have 3 training Sessions on Friday again this week. We will have a GS session in the Morning and Slalom in the afternoon on Friday with Gregor or Mike. Friday evening all who are not there through the day will be skiing with Todd or Dave B.

The plan for Saturday and Sunday is GS in the morning and Slalom in the afternoon. That means that you'll have all of your gear with you both days so even if we change the schedule a little due to available hill space you will be “Good to Go” !!

Could the athletes going to the MSA Speed even please bring their Speed Skis to do a few runs on both days.

The Coaching Staff has been very pleased with the Work Ethic being shown by our team this season - Lets keep it up.

A "GOOD LUCK/FOCUS/RACE HARD" goes out from all athletes and Coaches to Mike Hardy (The Cowboy) who will be racing FIS GS and SL in Ontario over the next 10 days with our pal Sammi and the NSA Team !!!

Can those who plan to train on Friday please let me know ASAP?? So Far we have - Dunkaroo,Sar- bear, Diana, Olivia, Kritter, Mike B. . . . . .Thanks

Have a great week, get lots of schoolwork done, get rested - See you on Friday for another GREAT weekend of Training !!

Cheers. . . . Gregor, Mike, Dave & Todd

January 18, 2010 - Update by Mike Clarke

Hi everyone

Ten Thousand what!!!! Big ones baby! If this is our starting point....look out! Way to go to Angus and Gregor for coming up with the idea. Social hours can be productive!! Way to go to all the parents, athletes and of course, Gar, grandfather Glen Boyd and grandson Max MacKinnon for the pledge and skiing efforts on Saturday! Amazing!

Besides the excitement of the 12 Hours of Wentworth, we had a really, really good weekend of training. Fitness levels were tested for sure. All the athletes should be commended on their efforts. Who trains harder??? That's right.....nobody!

It was a busy weekend and we still got in some tremendous gate mileage. Next time we see Leslie Wilson and/or Connor please say thank you. As Martock team members can attest, not everyone can get this much training. It was great to get our with some of the coaches on Saturday, we will do more this weekend.

One more big training weekend before Ben Eion.

If any of the parents would like a quick run down on National and/or FIS points or any other race related topics, we can make time during lunch on Saturday.

Hope some of you catch the re runs of the Wengen DH and SL. How's 150kph treat you!!

Have a great week.

Gregor, Dave and Mike

January 11, 2010 - Update & RACE REPORT  by Mike Clarke

K2's & J's

House keeping notes, then on to the good stuff.

Friday training - Please bring both GS and SL skis. Not sure what we will train. Maybe both.

Saturday is the BIG DAY! 12 hours of WW! Very important that you hammer those pledges and after a weekend of hard racing, taking advantage of time off will be key for the upcoming effort on Saturday. Rest......meaning sleep!!!

Now.... on to what we all love most. Ski racing!

What a great way to step into the 2010 season. We made it without freezing our feet and hands. As cold as it felt, not bad for January up there!

The coaches are very impressed with the overall team and individual accomplishments. Most of all, we are extremely proud how each one of the athletes came together and responded as a team. Support comes in different forms throughout race day. Moral support, clothing from top to bottom and objective course reporting were fully covered by our team.

We witnessed great changes in the mental approach to racing and a few dots are starting to get connected. We are headed in the right direction for sure!

In success and defeat, all handled themselves as true professionals! No whining, no excuses! Way to go!

Obviously, the weekend of racing never happens without mom and dad. Thank you for gate keeping and other important duties that enable the racing.

Thanks to Jim and his role on top. It was a great help and never goes unnoticed.

Thanks again for the great weekend, see you Friday.

Gregor, Mike and Dave
